A disposal that hums but will not turn is jammed, not dead, and often clears in a couple of minutes. One that is silent has usually tripped its own reset or the motor has gone. A leak under the unit is either the sink flange or the housing, and which one decides between a reseal and a replacement.

## What this covers

- **Jam and reset service**: Clearing a jam, freeing the flywheel and resetting the overload, and telling you if the motor is actually gone.
- **Disposal replacement**: Removing a failed unit and fitting a new one, with the dishwasher drain and trap reconnected correctly.
- **Leak repair**: Resealing the sink flange or replacing the unit where the housing itself has cracked or corroded.

## Detail

### Humming means jammed

A humming disposal has something against the flywheel. Do not keep flipping the switch, which burns the motor out.

### Silent means reset or motor

Try the red reset button on the underside first. If that does nothing, the motor has usually failed.

### Where the leak is

A leak at the top is the sink flange and reseals. A leak from the body is the housing, and that unit is done.

## Common questions

### My garbage disposal hums but will not turn. What is wrong?

It is jammed, not dead, and it often clears in a couple of minutes. Something is against the flywheel and the motor cannot start against it. The important part is to stop flipping the switch: every attempt against a jam is heat into a stalled motor, and that is how a jam that would have cleared becomes a replacement.

### My disposal is completely silent. Is it dead?

Try the red reset button on the underside first, because an overload trip is silent and looks exactly like a failure. If the reset does nothing and the switch and breaker are both good, the motor has usually gone, and at that point a replacement is the honest answer rather than a repair.

### Water is leaking under my disposal. Can it be fixed?

It depends where it is coming from, and that decides repair or replacement. A leak at the top is the sink flange, which reseals. A leak from the body of the unit is the housing itself, and a cracked or corroded housing is the end of that disposal. We look before quoting, because the two look similar from the cupboard floor and cost very differently.

### What should not go down a garbage disposal?

Grease above all, because it does not stay liquid past the trap and it is the most common cause of the repeat kitchen clogs we get called back to. Fibrous material, coffee grounds and starchy foods are the others. A disposal grinds; it does not make a drain line wider, and what it passes still has to travel the same pipe.

### Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Monkey Wrench Contractors LLC holds Nevada State Contractors Board license 0092999 and trades as Monkey Wrench Plumbing. We are a BBB accredited business with an A plus rating, and every technician is background checked. About thirty minutes before your appointment you get a text with the assigned technician's photo, name, license number and live ETA.

### Do you charge for an estimate?

No. The inspection is free and you get a flat-rate price before any work begins, so the number you approve is the number you pay. If the scope changes once something is opened up, we stop and re-quote rather than adding to the invoice at the end.
