Las Vegas homes are slab on grade, so a traditional basement sump is rare here. The pumps we see are sewage ejector basins for a below-grade bathroom, pool equipment pits, and the occasional crawlspace or yard drainage pit. The failures are the same everywhere: a stuck float, a failed check valve, or a motor that has quit.

## What this covers

- **Pump replacement**: Replacing a failed sump or sewage ejector pump, sized to the basin and the run it has to lift.
- **Float switch and check valve repair**: Fixing a pump that runs constantly or not at all, and a check valve that lets water fall back into the pit.
- **Testing and backup**: Testing an existing pump and, where it matters, adding a backup so a single failure does not flood.

## Detail

### Why they are uncommon here

Without basements, most valley pumps are sewage ejectors for a below-grade fixture rather than groundwater sumps.

### Runs constantly or never

A pump that will not stop, or will not start, is usually the float switch, and that is a repair before a replacement.

### Ejector pits and odour

A sewage ejector basin that smells is a failed seal or vent, not just the pump, and we check both.

## Common questions

### Why would a Las Vegas home have a sump pump?

Rarely for groundwater, because valley homes are slab on grade and basements are uncommon. What we actually see are sewage ejector basins serving a below-grade bathroom, pool equipment pits, and the occasional crawlspace or yard drainage pit. The pump is doing a different job than it would in a basement climate, but it fails the same ways.

### My pump runs constantly, or will not start at all. What is it?

In both cases the float switch is the first suspect, and that is a repair before it is a replacement. A float that has stuck up runs the motor continuously; one that has stuck down never calls for it. A failed check valve produces a third version of the same complaint, where water falls back into the pit and the pump immediately pumps it again.

### My ejector pit smells. Is that the pump?

Usually not. A sewage ejector basin that smells generally has a failed lid seal or a venting problem, and replacing a working pump will not fix either. We check the seal and the vent alongside the pump rather than assuming the smell and the pump are the same fault.

### Do I need a backup pump?

It depends what is below the pump. Where a failure means a below-grade bathroom backs up into the house, a backup is cheap insurance against a single point of failure. Where the pit serves yard drainage and an overflow is a puddle, it usually is not worth it. We say which one you have.

### Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Monkey Wrench Contractors LLC holds Nevada State Contractors Board license 0092999 and trades as Monkey Wrench Plumbing. We are a BBB accredited business with an A plus rating, and every technician is background checked. About thirty minutes before your appointment you get a text with the assigned technician's photo, name, license number and live ETA.

### Do you charge for an estimate?

No. The inspection is free and you get a flat-rate price before any work begins, so the number you approve is the number you pay. If the scope changes once something is opened up, we stop and re-quote rather than adding to the invoice at the end.
