My garbage disposal hums but will not turn. What is wrong?
It is jammed, not dead, and it often clears in a couple of minutes. Something is against the flywheel and the motor cannot start against it. The important part is to stop flipping the switch: every attempt against a jam is heat into a stalled motor, and that is how a jam that would have cleared becomes a replacement.
My disposal is completely silent. Is it dead?
Try the red reset button on the underside first, because an overload trip is silent and looks exactly like a failure. If the reset does nothing and the switch and breaker are both good, the motor has usually gone, and at that point a replacement is the honest answer rather than a repair.
Water is leaking under my disposal. Can it be fixed?
It depends where it is coming from, and that decides repair or replacement. A leak at the top is the sink flange, which reseals. A leak from the body of the unit is the housing itself, and a cracked or corroded housing is the end of that disposal. We look before quoting, because the two look similar from the cupboard floor and cost very differently.
What should not go down a garbage disposal?
Grease above all, because it does not stay liquid past the trap and it is the most common cause of the repeat kitchen clogs we get called back to. Fibrous material, coffee grounds and starchy foods are the others. A disposal grinds; it does not make a drain line wider, and what it passes still has to travel the same pipe.
