Does a reverse osmosis system replace a water softener?
No. RO treats drinking and cooking water at one tap; a softener treats the whole house. Reverse osmosis is the answer to how Las Vegas water tastes, not to what it does to your pipes and your water heater. The two are complementary, and a house with a scale problem is not fixed by an under-sink RO unit.
How long does an RO membrane last on Las Vegas water?
Less than the packaging suggests if it is fed unsoftened valley supply, because a high dissolved mineral load fouls a membrane faster. Pairing RO with a softener extends membrane life considerably, which is the main reason the two are often quoted together. Pre-filters and post-filters are on their own shorter schedule.
Can the RO system feed my fridge and ice maker?
Yes, run from the RO tank, and it is worth doing. Ice and chilled water made from untreated valley supply taste like untreated valley supply, which rather defeats the point of having treated the tap two feet away. It is a line run at installation rather than a separate system.
My RO is slow to fill or tastes off. What has failed?
It is one specific stage, and the symptom usually says which. Slow fill points at the membrane or a low tank pressure; taste returning points at exhausted carbon; air in the line points at the tank. We trace it to the stage that has actually failed and service systems other companies installed rather than insisting on a replacement.
