Do I actually need a water softener in Las Vegas?
The water here is classified as very hard by the utility itself: roughly 291 parts per million, about 17 grains per gallon, around two and a half times the national norm. That is the number behind short water heater life, scaled cartridges and dishwashers that die early. A softener does not make the water safer to drink; it stops the mineral load doing that damage on its way through the house. If the complaint is taste rather than scale, a filter or reverse osmosis is the better answer, and we will say so.
What size softener do I need?
Grain capacity is set by the hardness of your supply and how many people use the house, not by what fits the space. An undersized unit regenerates constantly and still lets hardness through; an oversized one costs more than it needs to. Sizing against the actual hardness reaching your address is the part that decides whether the thing works.
Do I need a permit for a water softener?
Clark County requires a permit for a water conditioning system, including one a homeowner installs themselves. We pull it as part of the job. If a quote you are comparing does not mention the permit, that is worth asking about before the work rather than after.
What is a soft water loop, and what if my house does not have one?
It is a pre-plumbed connection point the builder leaves so a softener can be added later without repiping. Plenty of valley homes have one; plenty do not. Where there is no loop, one can be installed, which is a smaller job than it sounds and is what makes a softener possible without opening the whole house.
