Is a tankless water heater worth it in Las Vegas?

Bought with the descaling built into the plan, it is a good deal; bought and forgotten, it is an expensive tank.
How often does a tankless heater need descaling here?
More often than the manual says, because the manual is written for national average water. The interval should be set against the hardness actually reaching the house, and a home on unsoftened valley supply needs it considerably more frequently than one behind a softener. Pairing a tankless with a softener is the single thing that most extends heat exchanger life in this valley.
Will my gas line support a tankless heater?
Often not without work, and this is where most quotes differ. A tankless unit can call for far more BTU than the tank it replaces, so the existing gas line and the meter both have to be checked against the unit's demand. If the line cannot carry it, upsizing it is part of the job and belongs in the quote rather than appearing as a surprise on the day.
What are isolation valves and do I need them?
They are a pair of service valves fitted either side of the unit at installation, and they are what makes future descaling a service call instead of a disassembly. Fitting them at install costs very little. Not fitting them means every descale starts by breaking the unit out of its connections, which is why we put them on as standard.
