Why do hose bibs fail so often here?
Valley sun is as hard on an outdoor faucet as a freeze is elsewhere. The bib sits in direct heat all summer, the washers and packing dry out, and it starts to drip or seize. A split bib wastes metered water continuously and soaks the wall it is mounted on, which is the part that turns a cheap fixture into an expensive repair.
Should outdoor lines be protected in a Las Vegas winter?
In the valley itself, hard freezes are brief, but exposed bibs and irrigation lines still burst in a cold snap, and the higher outlying areas like Boulder City and Pahrump get properly cold. Insulating a bib costs almost nothing next to repairing a line that split behind a wall.
