What a Water Main or Gas Line Costs in Las Vegas

Water main replacement runs $5,302 to $17,600 in Las Vegas and a gas line $2,863 to $4,532. Why caliche sets the price, and the free meter test that proves it is the main.

Your water main is the one line that feeds the whole house. Your gas line is the one you least want anybody guessing about. Both are buried, both are yours once they cross the property line, and both cost a bit more here than the national numbers suggest.

The short version:

  • Water main replacement: $5,302 to $17,600. A temporary repair runs $761 to $1,785.
  • Gas line, new or relocated: $2,863 to $4,532.
  • Caliche again. Nationally, 80 to 90 percent of a water main bill is digging and putting things back. Our digging is harder.
  • Wet yard with the sprinklers off? Or a meter that spins with everything shut? That is your sign.
  • Gas gets permitted and pressure tested every single time. No weekend version of this exists.

A few terms up front

Water main (service line)
The pipe from your meter to your house. The meter and the street side belong to the water district. From the meter to your wall is yours.
Gas line
The pipe carrying gas from the meter to an appliance. New runs, moves and caps are all permitted work.
Static pressure
Pressure with nothing running, read at an outside spigot. The number that decides a lot.
Pressure test
Holding a new line at pressure to prove it does not leak before it gets buried or turned on. Required on gas.
Pull-through
Pulling new pipe along the old path from pits at each end instead of digging the whole way. Runs $75 to $150 a foot nationally.
Restoration
Putting back whatever the trench went through. Often the biggest line on the bill.
Caliche
Cemented desert soil, roughly as cooperative as weak concrete.
Line locate
Marking buried utilities before digging. Never optional, no matter how empty the yard looks.

What main line work costs here

ServiceTypical price in Las Vegas
Water main line replacement$5,302 to $17,600
Water main repair or temporary repair$761 to $1,785
Gas line, new install or relocation$2,863 to $4,532

Prices are typical ranges for work in the Las Vegas valley. Final pricing depends on home size, access, materials and site conditions. All prices include professional installation and a 1-year workmanship warranty unless otherwise noted. Prices shown reflect a 10% buffer above base pricing. Customer-provided item pricing reflects installation labor only. Emergency and after-hours rates may apply.

Mind the gap between repair and replacement. A temporary fix at $761 to $1,785 buys time, not a solution, and on a line that failed from old age it tends to buy less than people hope.

Where we land against the country

 NationalLas Vegas
Water main replacement$2,500 to $15,000, median near $5,500$5,302 to $17,600

Our floor sits near their median. That is the ground talking, not a markup. Pipe costs the same everywhere. Getting to it does not.

Is it actually the main?

What you seeCould be the mainCould be something cheaper
Wet ground or a green stripe in the yardYes, especially between meter and houseIrrigation, if it follows the sprinkler schedule
Water bill jumped, nothing changedYesA running toilet does this too
Meter dial moving with everything offYes. Best test there isNothing innocent
Low pressure everywhereMaybeMore often a dead PRV, way cheaper
Low pressure at one faucetNoAngle stop, aerator or cartridge

Try the meter test before anything else. Turn off every fixture, the ice maker and the irrigation timer, then watch the little low-flow dial on the meter. Moving means water is going somewhere. Still means your pressure complaint lives inside the house, and that is a much smaller fix.

Gas lines are their own thing

Gas is not priced like water because it is not inspected like water. New runs and relocations get permitted, pressure tested and inspected before anything is turned on. That is why the range is tighter. $2,863 to $4,532 covers most residential work because most residential work follows the same steps.

Distance and what the trench crosses push it up, same as water. The test is the part nobody skips. If someone offers to run gas without a permit, that is the end of the conversation.

Permits, and who owns what

Water lines and gas piping both need a plumbing permit here. We pull it. Repairing a leak in an existing line usually does not, which is why a temporary fix can happen this afternoon and a replacement cannot.

On ownership: the district owns the main in the street and the meter. You own the line from the meter to the house, including under your driveway and often under the sidewalk.

What your quote should spell out

  • Length and depth of the run. That is what builds the price.
  • Trench or pull-through, in plain words.
  • What gets put back, and to what standard. Ask about concrete and pavers specifically.
  • The permit and the inspection, by name.
  • Your pressure reading, and whether a PRV is in there. More on that in our pressure guide.
  • The meter test result, which is the proof the main is the problem.
  • How long the water is off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a water main in Las Vegas?

$5,302 to $17,600, depending on length, depth, what the trench crosses and what has to be restored. A temporary repair runs $761 to $1,785.

How do I know if my water main is leaking?

Shut off everything in the house, including irrigation and the ice maker, then watch the meter's low-flow dial. If it moves, water is leaving the system. Wet ground or an unexplained green stripe between meter and house says the same thing.

Is the line from the street my responsibility?

From the meter to your house, yes, driveway and often sidewalk included. The meter itself and the street main belong to the water district.

How much is a gas line in Las Vegas?

$2,863 to $4,532 for a new install or relocation. The range is tighter than water main work because the job is more standardized, and the permit, pressure test and inspection are the same every time.

Why does this cost more here than the national average?

Because 80 to 90 percent of the bill is digging and restoration, not pipe, and caliche makes the digging half harder. The pipe itself costs the same as anywhere.

Can you replace it without tearing up my yard?

Often, with a pull-through from pits at each end. Costs more per foot and frequently less in total, since nobody has to rebuild your driveway.

Do I need a permit?

For replacement and new work, yes, on both water and gas. Repairing an existing leak usually does not, which is what lets a temporary fix happen same day.

Will a new main fix my low pressure?

Only if the main is the cause. Low pressure everywhere is more often a failed pressure reducing valve, which costs a fraction of this. Get the pressure measured before buying the big fix.

Happy to take a look

Main line work starts with proving the main is actually the problem, and that is a meter test and a pressure reading. Both take minutes and neither costs you anything.

Have a look at our outdoor plumbing service, or book a visit and we will run the tests before anyone mentions a trench.
