What Sewer Line Repair and Replacement Cost in Las Vegas

Sewer line costs in Las Vegas, from a $168 camera inspection to a $19,626 replacement, and how caliche and the street change the number.

A sewer line problem is the one plumbing bill that arrives with no warning and no ceiling. The range runs from $168 for a camera inspection to nearly $20,000 for a full main line replacement, and most homeowners have no way to tell which end of that they are looking at until someone puts a camera down the pipe.

Here is the short version, before the detail.

  • Get the camera inspection first. At $168 to $698 it is the cheapest money you will spend, and it is the only thing that turns a guess into a quote.
  • Replacement runs $6,361 to $19,626 here. Spot repair is about $8,197, which is why it is not automatically the cheap option.
  • Caliche is the cost driver. The cemented desert layer under this valley is the reason digging in Las Vegas is not the national-average job.
  • If the line runs under the street, nobody can quote it from a photograph. That work is priced per job because it involves the county, traffic control and restoration.
  • A cleanout is worth having before you need it. About $4,733 installed, and it makes every future visit faster and cheaper.

The words a quote will use

Lateral
The sewer line that belongs to you: from the house to where it meets the public main, usually in the street. Everything on your side of that connection is your bill.
Cleanout
A capped access point into the sewer line, normally in the front yard. It lets a plumber get a cable or camera into the line without pulling a toilet. We wrote about finding yours.
Camera inspection
A camera on a push rod sent down the line. It shows the actual defect and its distance from the access point, which is what makes a quote specific instead of a guess.
Line locate
Marking where the pipe runs and how deep, from the surface. Done before any digging so the excavation lands on the pipe rather than near it.
Smoke test
Non-toxic smoke pushed through the line to find breaks and bad connections by watching where it escapes. Useful for sewer smells with no visible cause.
Spot repair
Digging to one failed section and replacing that section only. Right when the rest of the pipe is sound.
Open trench
Excavating along the line and replacing the pipe in the ground. Cheapest per foot, most disruptive to whatever is on top of it.
Trenchless
Replacing or relining the pipe through access pits at either end rather than a continuous trench. Costs more per foot, saves the driveway or the mature landscaping above.
Root intrusion
Tree roots finding a joint, entering the pipe and growing inside it. The most common cause of a line that blocks, is cleared, and blocks again.
Caliche
Calcium carbonate cemented through desert soil into something close to weak concrete. The reason Las Vegas has no basements and the reason trenching here takes equipment.

Prices are typical ranges for work in the Las Vegas valley. Final pricing depends on home size, access, materials and site conditions. All prices include professional installation and a 1-year workmanship warranty unless otherwise noted. Prices shown reflect a 10% buffer above base pricing. Customer-provided item pricing reflects installation labor only. Emergency and after-hours rates may apply.

Two of those lines deserve a comment. Sewer repair in the street carries no figure because it genuinely cannot: it depends on the county, the depth, the traffic control required and what has to be put back afterward. Any contractor who quotes street work sight unseen is guessing. Replacing the drain lines inside the house is a different job again, priced with the repipe work rather than here. And spot repair at $8,197 sits close to the low end of a full replacement, which surprises people. The digging is most of the cost, and digging to one spot is not much cheaper than digging to several.

How that compares with the national average

 National guidanceLas Vegas
Open trench, per foot$60 to $250Upper half, because of caliche
Trenchless, per foot$80 to $250Upper half
Full lateral replacement$6,000 to $20,000$6,361 to $19,626
Camera inspection$125 to $500$168 to $698
Main line clearing$250 to $600Within our drain clearing range

The totals line up with national guidance more closely than repipe costs do, because a sewer lateral is a similar length everywhere. The difference is in what is above and around the pipe. A 60-foot lateral is 60 feet in any state. Sixty feet through caliche, under a desert-landscaped front yard with a concrete driveway over part of it, is not the same day's work as 60 feet through topsoil.

Why digging here costs what it does

Caliche

Caliche forms where mineral-rich groundwater rises through soil and evaporates, leaving calcium carbonate cemented through it. In parts of the valley it behaves like weak concrete. It is the direct reason homes here are built slab-on-grade with no basements, and it is why a trench that would take a morning elsewhere can take a day and heavier equipment here.

Depth and the slope the pipe has to keep

A sewer line works on gravity and has to fall at a consistent grade. The further the pipe runs from the house, the deeper it sits. Depth drives cost faster than length does, because a deeper trench is wider at the top, needs shoring, and produces more spoil to haul away.

What is on top of it

The pipe does not care what is above it. Your budget does. A lateral under decomposed granite is a straightforward dig. The same lateral under a stamped concrete driveway, a block wall or mature landscaping adds demolition and restoration that can rival the plumbing.

Hard water and scale

Valley water runs about 16 grains per gallon, and Henderson higher. Scale builds on the inside of drain lines the same way it builds in a water heater, narrowing the bore and giving solids something to catch on. It is part of why older cast iron here fails earlier than its reputation suggests. Our guide to Las Vegas hard water covers what that mineral load does to the rest of the house.

Repair or replace?

This is the decision the camera exists to answer. Three questions settle it.

QuestionPoints to repairPoints to replace
How many defects? One, clearly boundedSeveral along the run
What is the pipe made of?Sound PVC or ABS with isolated damageCast iron or clay at the end of its life
Why did it fail?Something identifiable and local, a settled joint or one rootAge, scale or roots at multiple joints

The trap is spending $8,197 on a spot repair and then being back in the same trench in two years. If the camera shows roots at three joints, the single-spot repair is the expensive option, not the cheap one.

Clearing the line and inspecting it are two different visits with two different outcomes. Cabling gets the water moving again; the camera is what tells you whether it will stay that way.

Trenchless or open trench

 Open trenchTrenchless
Cost per footLowerHigher
What happens to the yardA continuous trench along the pipeAccess pits at either end
Best whenThe pipe is shallow and nothing of value sits over itA driveway, mature trees or hardscape sit over the line
Not an option whenRarelyThe pipe has collapsed or lost its grade
Total cost including restorationCan exceed trenchless once the driveway is repouredOften lower once restoration is counted

Compare the installed total including putting the surface back, not the per-foot rate. Trenchless frequently loses on the plumbing line and wins on the invoice.

How long it takes

StageTypical durationWhat is happening
Camera inspection1 to 2 hoursThe defect is found, measured and recorded
Line locate and permit1 to 5 daysPipe marked and depth confirmed, permit pulled
Spot repair1 dayDig, cut out, replace, backfill
Full replacement, open trench2 to 4 daysTrench, replace, inspect, backfill
Full replacement, trenchless1 to 3 daysPits dug, pipe burst or lined, tie-ins made
InspectionScheduledCounty inspects before the trench is closed
Surface restoration1 to 5 daysConcrete, pavers or landscaping, often a separate crew

If the line runs into the street, add time rather than days: that work involves county coordination and traffic control, which is scheduled rather than squeezed in.

Permits and the street

Sewer connections and sewer work require a permit in Clark County, and the inspection happens before the trench is backfilled. Your contractor pulls it.

Where the line crosses from your property into the public right of way, a second layer appears: the county controls that ground, and cutting into a street means permission, traffic control and a specified way of putting the surface back. This is why our price book lists street repair as priced per job rather than as a range. It is not evasion. It is that the number depends on things the county decides.

What is your responsibility and what is not

The lateral from your house to the connection with the public main is yours, including the part under the sidewalk and often part of the street. The public main itself is not. Homeowners routinely assume the city owns everything past the property line and are surprised. If a backup is in your lateral, it is your bill, and homeowners insurance usually does not cover the pipe itself, only some of the damage it caused.

The cheapest thing you can do before any of this

Install a cleanout if you do not have one. About $4,733 in the front yard, and it changes the economics of every future visit: a plumber can get a cable and a camera into the line in minutes instead of pulling a toilet to find access. On a house with any history of backups it pays for itself across two or three visits.

After that, know the signs that mean call now rather than wait. Several drains slow at once. Gurgling from a toilet when the washing machine drains. Sewer smell in the yard. Water appearing at the lowest drain in the house. Those are main line symptoms, not fixture symptoms, and they do not improve on their own. Water appearing where no fixture explains it is a leak detection job first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a sewer line in Las Vegas?

Between $6,361 and $19,626 for a main line replacement. Where you land depends on length, depth, whether the dig is open trench or trenchless, and what has to be put back over the top.

Why is a spot repair almost as expensive as a replacement?

Because the digging is most of the job. A spot repair runs about $8,197 against a replacement starting at $6,361, and the difference between excavating to one point and excavating along the run is smaller than people expect. If the camera shows several defects, the spot repair is the expensive choice.

Do I need a camera inspection first?

Yes, and it is the best money in this entire article. At $168 to $698 it tells you what the defect is, how far down the line it sits and whether you are buying a repair or a replacement. Any quote written without one is an estimate dressed as a price.

Is trenchless cheaper than digging?

Not per foot. It is often cheaper in total, because it does not require removing and replacing a driveway or mature landscaping. Compare the installed total with restoration included, not the per-foot rate.

Who pays when the sewer line is under the street?

You do, for your lateral, which usually extends to the connection with the public main under the street. The public main is the county's. This is why street work appears in our price book as priced per job: it involves county permission, traffic control and a specified restoration.

Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line replacement?

Usually not the pipe itself. Policies more often cover some of the resulting damage rather than the cost of replacing a failed line, and many exclude gradual failure entirely. Read the policy before assuming, and ask your carrier specifically about service line coverage, which is sometimes available as an add-on.

How do I know if the problem is the main line or just one drain?

If several fixtures slow at once, if a toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or if water appears at the lowest drain in the house, that is the main line. A single slow sink with everything else fine is a fixture problem and a much smaller bill.

One slow fixture is usually a branch line, and our drain clearing prices start a long way below anything on this page.

How long does a sewer replacement take?

Two to four days for open trench, one to three for trenchless, plus the inspection before backfill and whatever surface restoration is needed afterward. Street work takes longer because it is scheduled around the county.

Will tree roots come back after the line is replaced?

Roots enter at joints. New PVC with properly sealed joints gives them far less to find, which is why replacement ends the cycle where repeated clearing does not. The tree does not have to come out in most cases.

Getting a straight answer for your house

Nobody can price a sewer line from a phone call, and anyone who does is quoting a number they intend to revise. What can be done is a camera inspection that shows you the actual defect, at the actual distance, with a recording you keep.

That is where we start, and it is what turns the range at the top of this page into one number for your house. See our sewer services for what the work involves, read our guide to finding your cleanout, or book an inspection and we will put a camera down the line before anyone quotes you anything.
