Gas Meter and House Line in Las Vegas
The meter and everything upstream of it belongs to Southwest Gas. The pipework downstream, running into and around your house, is yours. That line decides who you call, and it is the thing most homeowners are unsure about.
Where it is in a valley home
On an exterior wall, usually the side or rear of the house, with the main shut-off tab on the inlet pipe. From the meter the house line runs to the water heater, furnace, range and any outdoor appliance.
What usually goes wrong
- Corrosion where the house line goes below grade, which is where valley soil and irrigation meet steel pipe.
- Undersized line after an appliance is upgraded, so a new heater or range never quite performs.
- Unsupported or strained pipe after a remodel, an added outdoor kitchen or a pool heater.
What to check first

Keep the meter clear of planting, storage and anything that blocks access to the shut-off tab.

If you smell gas at the meter, leave and call Southwest Gas from outside.

Note whether an appliance underperforms only when others run, which points at line sizing rather than the appliance.
