Gas Shut-Off Valve in Las Vegas Homes
If you smell gas, do not troubleshoot it. Leave the house, and call Southwest Gas from outside. That is an evacuation, not a plumbing call, and everything else on this page comes after that.
Where it is in a valley home
The main gas shut-off is at the meter, normally on a side or rear wall. The valve is a tab on the pipe running into the meter: in line with the pipe is open, across it is closed. It takes a wrench, so keep one near the meter rather than in a drawer indoors.
What usually goes wrong
- Appliance shut-offs behind a range or heater seize because they are never exercised.
- Flexible appliance connectors age, kink or get strained when an appliance is pulled out for cleaning.
- Sediment traps get left off or fitted the wrong way round during an appliance swap.
What to check first
- 1
Know which way the meter tab turns before you ever need it, and keep a wrench outside.
- 2
Never use a match or a lighter to look for a leak.
- 3
If a pilot will not stay lit, stop and have it looked at rather than repeating the attempt.
Call us when you need a gas line moved, extended or capped, or an appliance shut-off replaced. Anything involving a live leak goes to Southwest Gas first.
