A toilet that runs is almost always a flapper that no longer seats, and it is one of the cheapest parts in the house. A toilet that rocks, or leaks at the floor, is a wax seal, and that one is worth acting on before the subfloor takes it.
Where it is in a valley home
The shut-off is on the wall to the left of the bowl. Inside the tank: fill valve, float, flapper and overflow tube. Below the bowl: the flange and wax seal, and the supply riser at the tank.
What usually goes wrong
- Flappers harden and warp, so the tank leaks into the bowl and the fill valve cycles all night.
- Hard water scales the fill valve and the rim jets, so the flush weakens gradually rather than suddenly.
- A rocking bowl breaks the wax seal, which leaks at the floor and into the subfloor rather than visibly.
What to check first

Put a little food coloring in the tank and wait without flushing. Color in the bowl means the flapper is the fault.

Check the fill level against the mark on the overflow tube, since an overfilled tank runs into it constantly.

Press the bowl side to side. Any movement means the closet bolts or the flange need attention before the seal fails.
